For correct waste management practices to be effective and applied universally throughout the healthcare organisation’s services, it is essential all members of staff undertaking clinical practices are trained by competent people. Effectively delivered training significantly reduces risk and costs.
Independent Safety Services Limited offers a wide range of healthcare waste management training courses each tailored to suit the client’s needs and delivered by experienced trainers. Courses are aimed at different specialities within a healthcare organisation and for each service provider. We have courses for porters, cleaners and domestic services staff, as well as courses for clinicians and clinical managers and those involved in the transportation of healthcare waste. There are several delivery methods that ISSL offer depending on the client’s requirements, including train the trainer and ward level training.
ISSL has experience delivering training in high secure areas and prison environments. Training teams are CRB checked.
The training will explain how to manage waste generated during the delivery of healthcare. The content is fully aligned with HTM 07-01, Safe Management of Healthcare Waste. We use your waste costs and pictures from your site practices where they are available. Where we have conducted audits for a site or multiple sites, we link the training to audit findings. These factors personalise the training provided to the client and help relate the course material to staff.
Examples of the courses we run are:
- General Waste Awareness Training;
- Pharmaceutical waste;
- Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE);
- Management of offensive waste;
- Document Control and Record Keeping; and
- Waste Management for laboratories and research centres.
This is not a complete list of all the training packages that we deliver as many are bespoke to the individual clients.
Our training courses can be run in any venue. Certificates of attendance are provided free of charge.
ISSL has worked in partnership with Cloud Sustainability to develop and endorse an e-learning course on the Introduction to Managing Healthcare Waste. The 40 minute module provides an interactive introduction to the safe and best practice management of healthcare waste. Independent Safety Services has many years experience in Driver Safety Training and an enviable record in claims reductions, both cost and frequency.
Health & Safety legislation applies to on-the-road work activities, as to all work activities and the risks should be effectively managed within a health & safety system.
The Department for Transport takes the view that employers should provide a Driver Assessment & Training programme to achieve compliance with the above.

The courses have always been well received by our employees.
We believe that this programme has been instrumental in helping 3M UK Plc to achieve a reduction in our accident rate of approximately 35%, which has been maintained -with a consequent avoidance of risk of injury to our employees and other road users.”
The carriage of dangerous goods on the road is a highly regulated and complex operation. Independent Safety Services Limited has wide ranging and comprehensive experience and knowledge in this subject.
We offer training courses / programmes to suit the needs of every organisation.
Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) – Initial / Refresher
Transporters or Consignors (senders) of dangerous goods may be legally required to appoint an examination qualified DGSA.
Whilst many organisations choose to use us in a consultancy role, to fulfil this statutory requirement, others require a member of their own staff to achieve this qualification.
The five day ‘Initial’ course culminates in an examination set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and a Vocational Certificate is issued to successful candidates. This is valid for five years, after which the examination must be re-taken following ‘Refresher’ training (three days duration). Courses are sheduled ahead of the quarterly examinations.
ADR – Vocational Certificate Training for Drivers
The ADR qualification is obtained by attendance on an approved course and passing SQA examinations.
Course durations vary from 3 – 5 days, depending on the specific modules required, which relate to type of goods carried.
Courses are run throughout the year at our locations or at client’s premises, by arrangement.

- Carriage of Clinical Waste / Infectious Material
