Statutory Duty
The requirement to conduct ‘User’ risk assessments at computer workstations has been in place since 1992 when the DSE Regulations were first introduced. HSE guidance document (L26) explains the need to provide adequate information/training and completion (by the User) of an ergonomic checklist.

What are the risks?
Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis are not necessarily the most common complaints suffered by computer users. There are various musculoskeletal complaints (particularly lower back pain) which result from poor workstation layout and sitting posture, not to mention eye-strain, headaches and blood circulation problems.

Assessment Methodology/Cost
Conventional ‘1 to 1’ assessments at the workstation by a trained Assessor and the completion of a handwritten assessment form can be a time-consuming and expensive exercise. Training and assessment records are always a problem to administer and keep up to date.
The solution for numerous employers (particularly those with 100s of Users) has been to look at more cost effective solutions using on-line assessment services. Care should be taken however, to ensure that you do not fall into the trap of ‘self-assessment’, which many of these services provide.
Q. So, is an option available which combines the cost effective on-line service with the involvement of a competent DSE Assessor (without which the assessment is unlikely to satisfy the ‘suitable and sufficient’ criteria specified in safety regulations).
A. Yes – with DSEasy® - here’s how it works:

  • User is sent Training/Test/Checklist package by email
  • User completes training module on-line at a time convenient to him/her
  • Training is recorded
  • User undertakes a simple test to establish that the training has been understood
  • Test results are recorded
  • User completes ergonomic questionnaire which is automatically copied to the Assessor who decides on the level of response to complete the risk assessment
A ‘1 to 1’ assessment programme conducted by a competent Assessor is likely to cost in excess of £40 per User. Typically, DSEasy will be less than £10 per User.
Benefits
  • Reduces Assessors time by up to 80% on each assessment (by focusing on problem areas highlighted on the completed questionnaire
  • Notifies Assessors of significant risk issues before a visit to the workstation
  • Enables risk assessment programme to prioritise high-risk Users
  • Delivers in-situ training to Users at a time convenient to them
  • Users make ergonomic improvements to their workstation/sitting posture immediately
  • Advises Users of the health risks associated with DSE work
  • Advises Users of eye test requirements
  • Provides updated training and assessment records
  • Avoids unnecessary Employers Liability insurance claims and reduces premiums
  • Reduces absenteeism
  • Incorporates DSE Assessor Report and Audit Trail
  • Promotes good relationships with employees (‘corporate tlc’)
Free Trial
Why not evaluate DSEasy for yourself – we are offering a free trial of the User training and test modules. If you are interested we can also arrange for you to see the Administrator Suite so that you can see how the system is managed and records are kept.
If you prefer, we will arrange a demonstration at your offices.
